Decorating wooden furniture and other objects by applying a lacquer finish--and hand-painted lacquer designs--is an oriental tradition almost as old as the civilizations themselves. Natural lacquer comes from a special tree native to China and Japan and, after processing, is applied layer by layer until a fine, lustrous coat results. The piece can then be hand-painted, or decorated with mother-of-pearl inlay or on-lay.
